Duke freshman Kon Knueppel has been turning heads since arriving in Durham earlier this year. He has quickly earned a spot in Jon Scheyer’s deep rotation and has played his way into the starting lineup, all while attracting significant attention from NBA scouts.
At 6’7", Knueppel is a versatile guard/forward with a unique blend of shooting, basketball IQ, and playmaking ability. His skill set makes him one of the top shooting prospects in the 2025 NBA Draft class. Knueppel's shooting ability is arguably his most standout trait, and he has the potential to be a lethal perimeter threat at the next level. He can shoot from beyond the arc with confidence and range, and he’s comfortable spotting up or coming off screens to get his shot off in a variety of situations. His shooting ability is enhanced by his understanding of spacing, using his gravity to open up opportunities not just for himself but for his teammates as well. In addition to his scoring, Knueppel has shown solid playmaking ability, leveraging his shooting threat to create for others. He’s capable of making plays off the dribble and setting up teammates, with flashes of on-ball creation and impressive tight handles. However, there are times when his passing can be a bit reckless, leading to turnovers or missed opportunities. Improving his decision-making and execution as a passer would go a long way in maximizing his impact on the floor, especially in the NBA, where the speed and physicality of the game require precise and timely ball movement.
While Knueppel’s offensive game is promising, he does have limitations that could hinder his potential at the next level. He is not an explosive athlete, which limits his upside. His lack of lateral quickness is a particular concern, as it could pose challenges when guarding more dynamic players in the NBA. Although he compensates for this with solid positioning and basketball IQ, his physical disadvantages may become more evident against NBA-level competition, particularly on defense. Despite his athletic limitations, Knueppel’s length is an asset that could help mitigate some of these concerns. At 6'7", he has the size and wingspan to be an effective defender, even if he's not the quickest. However, his defensive awareness and ability to guard quicker players will be key areas to monitor as he progresses, both in college and as he looks ahead to the NBA. If Knueppel can continue to develop his passing, tighten up his execution, and improve defensively, he could make a successful transition to the NBA as a complementary 6'7" guard with elite shooting. His ability to impact the game without needing to dominate the ball makes him a strong fit in modern NBA offenses that prioritize spacing, ball movement, and positional versatility.
In college, Knueppel should be able to thrive in Duke's system and will likely continue to build on his strengths. However, his NBA prospects will depend on his ability to address defensive concerns and show that his shooting and playmaking can translate effectively against stronger and quicker competition. If he can make strides in these areas, he could become a valuable piece for an NBA team looking for a high-IQ, high-floor player who can shoot, playmake, and contribute on both ends of the floor.
