Cerebro Player Profile: Cooper Flagg
Big Board 1.0 Rankings :
Evaluation by: @codyramseygamebreaknow
12/16/24 Cooper Flagg has lived up to his billing as the top prospect in his class, though some players have excelled in specific areas more than he has. Despite this, his overall contributions remain highly impressive. Currently, Flagg leads the Duke Blue Devils in points (15.9), assists (3.6), rebounds (9.0), and blocks (1.4)—an extraordinary achievement for a 17-year-old playing on a team with the No. 1 recruiting class of 2024 and several seasoned veterans. His ability to make an impact across multiple facets of the game is undeniable, even if his development in some areas has been slower than anticipated.
One of the more unexpected aspects of Flagg’s game this season has been his on-ball facilitation. He serves as the pick-and-roll ball handler on 19% of his possessions, maintaining an impressive 5.9% turnover rate. This is especially noteworthy given that he wasn’t a ball-dominant player in high school. With a 1.57 assist-to-turnover ratio and a 16.7% assist percentage, Flagg has demonstrated playmaking abilities typically seen in much larger lead initiators. Although he currently ranks in the 45th percentile for pick-and-roll ball handler possessions, his performance in this role is a fascinating development, especially considering his size and his significant impact on the game.

Despite his success as a playmaker, there are still notable concerns about Flagg’s offensive production as both a primary creator and a finisher, particularly in terms of his perimeter shooting. He ranks in the 17th percentile on catch-and-shoot attempts, making only 25% of his 32 attempts. This raises significant concerns, as perimeter shooting and efficiency are crucial skills that tend to translate well at higher levels of competition. If Flagg is to evolve into a true three-level scorer, enhancing this aspect of his game will be paramount.
Another intriguing area of Flagg’s development is his potential as a downhill finisher. Currently, 41.4% of his shots come at the rim, where he converts at a rate of 61.8%. This evokes comparisons to a player like Scottie Barnes during his time at Florida State, a player who later earned NBA Rookie of the Year honors in the 2021-2022 season. Flagg’s ability to finish at the rim in traffic, combined with his size and agility, hints at his future potential as a versatile scorer.
In terms of his overall offensive game, Flagg is shooting 42.9% from the field, 22.2% from beyond the arc, and 72.5% from the free-throw line. While these numbers are far from terrible, they feel underwhelming for a prospect of his caliber, leading to questions about his offensive ceiling. His shooting numbers, especially from three-point range, must improve for him to be considered a true offensive threat at the next level.
On the defensive side of the ball, Flagg’s impact is undeniable and remains one of his strongest selling points. While some advanced defensive metrics may not fully capture his influence, his on-court presence is undeniable. Flagg ranks in the 57th percentile defensively, holding opponents to just 32.9% shooting from the field. In isolation situations, he performs even better, ranking in the 70th percentile by limiting opponents to just 25% shooting. Additionally, Flagg has accumulated 28 "stocks" (steals + blocks) this season, showcasing his ability to guard both on the perimeter and as a vertical presence at the rim.
Flagg is primarily utilized as a perimeter defender, frequently tasked with guarding the opposing team’s best player. This responsibility is especially demanding, as it combines with his offensive playmaking duties. Nevertheless, his two-way impact is evident on film, even if it doesn't always show up in traditional box scores. His ability to disrupt passing lanes, defend at the rim, and stay in front of opposing ball handlers makes him an intriguing prospect as a potential NBA defender.
In conclusion, while there are areas for growth—particularly in terms of perimeter shooting—Flagg remains my top prospect in this class. If he can develop a consistent outside shot, he will dispel any doubts about his status as the premier player in this year’s draft cycle. His well-rounded skill set, defensive prowess, and untapped offensive potential give him the tools to become an elite prospect in the NBA, provided his development continues on the right track.
10/4/24 What more can be said about Cooper Flagg that hasn't already been articulated? As one of the youngest draft-eligible freshmen in the country, he has firmly established himself as the consensus number-one player nationally and the frontrunner for the top selection in the 2025 NBA Draft. Flagg’s exceptional talent is evident not only in his scoring ability but also in his overall impact on the game.
In his last 10 games at Montverde Academy, Flagg showcased his skills with an impressive stat line of 23.1 points per game, 3.8 assists, and 8.2 rebounds. These numbers highlight his versatility and ability to contribute across multiple facets of the game, making him a valuable asset for any team. Offensively, Flagg has significantly improved in recent years, developing a skill set that projects him as a potential number one option at the next level. He plays a physical brand of basketball, leveraging his size and skill to create advantages for himself. With a solid frame that allows him to function effectively as a modern power forward, he also possesses the self-creation and shot-making upside to operate on the perimeter. Flagg is fundamentally sound, boasting excellent footwork, an understanding of angles, and a fluid playing style. Where he truly distinguishes himself is on the defensive end. Averaging 5.3 stocks (a combination of steals and blocks) per game, Flagg has demonstrated a rare blend of athleticism, instincts, and tenacity that makes him a formidable presence on defense. When he first emerged as a phenom several years ago, it was his defensive abilities that got scouts excited, and he has only improved since then. Flagg has added strength to his frame and grown taller, enhancing his ability to guard multiple positions effectively. He can defend his man on-ball, hold his ground in the post, protect the paint, and make plays off-ball as a weakside defender. His unique combination of physical tools and mental processing on defense is unmatched, and he has the potential to become one of the best defenders in the NBA. Additionally, Flagg is an elite shot-blocker, showcasing his timing and instincts in protecting the rim. His ability to guard three positions effectively not only bolsters his defensive value but also allows him to switch seamlessly in various defensive schemes.

His journey will be closely monitored, as he aims to prove that he is not just a top prospect but a future star in the making. With his combination of youth, talent, and proven performance, he should undoubtedly top everyone’s draft boards as we head into the season. In addition to his on-court abilities, Flagg’s work ethic and competitive spirit have been noted by coaches and analysts alike, suggesting that he possesses the mental fortitude necessary for success at the professional level. If he can continue to refine his game and adapt to the demands of higher competition, Cooper Flagg is poised not only to be a top pick in the draft but also to transform the landscape of the NBA.
